Open registration – it’s dangerous or not?

  • I read that open registration on WP is dangerous for the site. Also, I read that a lot of WP sites use open registration and don’t have any problems.

    So, where is a myth and where are facts? It’s worth it to use open registration on WP or no? Presently I have open registration and, of course, access to the admin panel is locked – I use Ultimate Member plugin.

    What purpose does registering on your site serve? Let’s start with what you’re trying to accomplish.

    I just want to create a small game portal with user profiles, who will be able to comment and rate games and articles. Without profiles wp comments are very unreliable – anyone on behalf of anyone can write anything. I have a group in social net and want to complement it by WP site. But if there is a serious danger, I can abandon the idea of open registration.

    Under what circumstances there might be a serious danger, connected with open comments?

    There is no serious danger. Install a good anti-spam plugin like Akismet or AntiSpam Bee to cut down on the spam, and be sure to review the comments, too. Moderation is so much fun.

    Thanks. I was a little wrong, I meant open registration. Is there any vulnerabilities connected with it? How security measures should I use when registration is opened for everyone?
