A large number of people are getting the “oops, something went wrong, please try again later” error when attempting to subscribe to my blog.
It doesn’t happen to everyone, only some people.

I have my site hosted through Go Daddy and use a gmail email address.

I am using the MailChimp adin, linked to a mailchimp list.

I have no idea why this is happening so any feedback is welcome.

    Thank you so much.

I just reproduced the error on my second sign-up.

Do you see anything in the logfile, under MailChimp for WP – Other?

It could be some connectivity issues from GoDaddy to the MailChimp API server.

    [2016-07-04 12:15:32] ERROR: Form 165 > MailChimp API error:

That is the error that it is coming up with.

Do you know how I resolve this error?

    Thank you so much.

    Hi smallbizshout,

If you go to the MailChimp for WP > MailChimp settings page, did you fill your API key? And are you on version 3.1.10 of the plugin?

I believe we’ve seen the empty error message before, but it should be fixed in the latest version of the plugin.

    Let us know please. ??

    Hi Danny,

Thank you for your help Danny.

I have just confirmed that I am on version 3.1.10 and I have filled out the API Key.

The error doesn’t occur 100% of the time, but it does seem to be occurring quite regularly.

Any other tips to repair it?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

It seems to be a problem connecting to the MailChimp API. This problem can be on your server, or on the MailChimp server, or anywhere in between. Hard to debug.

The first thing I would try is to generate a new API key in your MailChimp account, see if it ends with another number than your current API key and try that new key.

If you can login to your servers console you can do a ping -t to your MailChimp API server and see if a lot of packets drop to confirm the connection problem.

Are you on shared hosting or on a VPS?

    Hi Lap,

Thank you so much for your help.

I am getting hosting through GO Daddy, which I assume is shared hosting?

I will attempt to get a new API Key through my MailChimp account and let you know how that goes.

    Thank you so much.

During testing of my new website prior to launching it, I was getting this error when trying to submit a form on Chrome or Safari, but not on Firefox or Opera, both of which worked perfectly.

However… generating a new API Key on my Mailchimp account resolved it and now it’s working on all the browsers I have tested.

Lesson: always test your form on multiple browsers!

Personally I doubt that different browsers actually had anything to do with this as this error is generated in the backend. I’m glad to hear that using a new API key solved the problem. Thanks for letting us know.

Yes, clearly the nature of the error would mean it’s a backend issue ultimately, but I can only report that it was very consistently / persistently occurring on two specific browsers at a time when it was consistently not occurring on two others. Your API tip was pure gold, so thank you.
