Only show next recurring event

Is it possible to show only the next event for recurring events and hide the others until the previous has finished. Any way of grouping them would work as long as a recurring event only shows once on a front end page.
If you use a lot of recurring events then the list becomes long and repetitive as well as single events getting lost in between all the recurring events.
I have been looking at the documentation and found the group_by option but I would like this to apply to all events/categories pages etc.
