Only recommened for 2000 words max
-
We just wanted to transfer our existing texts (de+en) to a new WordPress website. After extensive research, we chose WeGlot. The setup was uncomplicated. However, serious drawbacks emerged:
Our website contained approximately 4500 words in total. These could be “translated” during the one-week(?) trial period with a limit of 10,000 words. However, after that, a subscription must be purchased, even if no further changes are made to the website. And that gets expensive (from €15 per month). Excluding pages from translation is possible but doesn’t help because then these pages are displayed in the original language although they are translated (even in WeGlot). Additionally, text on excluded pages cannot be overwritten. Conclusion: WeGlot is only suitable for small businesses that have less than 2000 words on their website.
Another disadvantage (likely applicable to all providers of such tools): You have to stay “on board” for life, otherwise, the website will only be delivered in the original language.
Another major disadvantage: I can only customize the target page to a limited extent. WeGlot always translates 1:1. If you need significantly different text on the target page rather than a direct translation, you have to manually edit the translations. And that can be very time-consuming.It’s also unclear which system is used for the automatic translation (at least I couldn’t find any obvious information about it). Furthermore, the quality of the translation is sometimes not great. Also, the formatting is sometimes not properly retained. For example, in numbered headings, the first letter was lowercase (“1. our Terms and Conditions”) although it was upperrcase in the source.
The start was also very unfortunate:
Initially, only German (the source language) was visible. Purely by chance and after hours of trial and error, I discovered that you have to activate “Make public” for the language direction. Additionally, if I’m not mistaken, you have to confirm every automatically translated string for it to be visible. Otherwise, the original language continues to be displayed.
