is there a plugin for customisation of category pages?

Regarding only showing just certain categories on the front page… I found this on the WordPress Wiki:

Although it doesn’t seem to be solid; I will try the plugin supplied above first.

on your mainpage, simple use this code:

<?php query_posts('cat=X'); ?>

where X is the number assigned to the Featured category.

To customize category pages, try using the Custom Query String plugin or simply create a page saved as ‘category-#.php’ in your template for the category that you wish to customize.
