One month of free membership?

  • Hi.

    I want to reward winners of competitions with one month of free membership. What’s the easiest way to accomplish this?

    It’s easy enough with people who haven’t registered – I could just make a discount-code for them with the initial payment = 0. The problem arises when the winners already have purchased a month of membership. Do members automatically get the option of filling in discount-codes after a month of payment? If so, then that could be a solution. If not, I am quite sure about how I could do this.

    Any help would be deeply appreciated.

    Are your levels non-recurring? If so, you could just give them a discount code to check out again for the same level with expiration of 1 month. This will just add an extra month to their expiration date.

    If your levels are recurring, that might get a little more complicated though.

    Does that make sense?

    I understand but the payments are recurring on a monthly basis. Any ideas on how to do it then?

    In that case, this is a little trickier. The easiest thing to do would be to simply credit the user the money for 1 month, but there are a few other things you could try as well.

    You could go the discount code route, give the user a discount code with free access which expires in 1 month, but then of course they would have to check out again.

    If your gateway supports pausing subscriptions, you could always do that and then reactivate their subscription at the end of the month manually, but not all gateways support that obviously.

    There is also an option for Stripe users in v2.0 that allows you to modify a user’s subscription from their Edit User page, but there is no official release for 2.0 set yet, and compatibility with current setups and different addons and plugins will vary a bit. However, if you want to try it, you can grab the 2.0 branch from our GitHub repo.

    Thanks for the help.

    I am using Paypal Express and I don’t think I can pause subscriptions with that? Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Unfortunately, Stripe isn’t available in my country yet (Norway)…

    Sorry, it sounds like the easiest thing to do would be to go with the 1st or 2nd option.
