• When I go to a page on my live site and click the Edit Page link in the toolbar at the top of the page, it takes me to the wrong page. The same thing happens when I try to access the page for editing from the PAGES section in WP admin. I THINK the page it’s taking me to is a page that I think I deleted long ago (I’m not sure, I just know it doesn’t look familiar so I’m assuming).

    The permalink looks correct.

I cannot find any way to access the page. Would appreciate any help.

  • You can try refreshing your browser or clearing your cache.

From experience if I need to update or replace the page’s URL, I like to add ‘trash’ or ‘2’ at the end of the URL. Then I’d trash the page to avoid any caching issues with the new correct page.

Browser caching can be the culprit for such issues indeed. You may try cleaning it up or Ctrl+F5 in Windows and Cmd+R in Mac for a clean refresh.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have tried the clean refresh but it does nothing. It seems another problems because these are pages that have been up for months. I haven’t replaced them, I only modify the contents.

At least one of the pages contain intricate coding that would be difficult to reproduce on a new page so I’d rather leave rebuilding the page as a last resort. It would be especially disturbing if I rebuilt the page and then had it happen again.

The part that disturbs me is that the published page is correct (except for being outdated) but the admin version is very, very different.

Thanks again. I hope to continue getting more ideas.

Could you give us an example of the urls that should appear and the ones that actually appear (without the domain part) if you could?

Unfortunately, I can’t because it seems the content that appears for editing is either a very early version of the same page (one that is no longer available) or a page that no longer exists. I have also tried reverting to an earlier version, but this brings up other problems.

I now see I didn’t word my title well. I should have said the content for editing doesn’t match the published content.

I’m still not sure if I’m describing my issue clearly: In the live wordpress site, the correct pages and URLs appear, but when I try to edit those pages in wordpress, the “content” area contains completely different content. It’s content that was updated long ago on a different page. That other pale URL (assuming that’s where this content comes from) displays the correct content in edit/admin mode and is a child page of the one with the incorrect editing content.

When I return to the live view of the page, the correct page displays. So my viewers are seeing the correct content, but it is outdated and I cannot update it. This happens on other pages as well, but not all of them. So far it sees that it is the PARENT page in a section that goes bad.

I am in the process of manually rebuilding the content of bad pages as I come across them and saving copies of the html in case goes bad again (which complicates things). But I would still like to know what could be causing it and what I can do to prevent it.

    I hope someone can help.
