I’ve been wanting to remove the unsupported Excerpt Reloaded plugin for a while and was keen to try this one. I applaud the authors! Hooking in to the the_except tag makes this very easy to use. The settings are clear and give a lot of flexibility.

The only thing is that if you set the length at which the excerpt will cut off at any given length, the “read more…” link will appear no matter how short the post is. You can have an excerpt length set at 100 words, and on a 10 word post there will be a “read more…” link that will only frustrate the reader.

Fortunately there’s a fix I found on the forum: some code you can put into your functions.php file so that the plugin only creates an excerpt when the post is over your desired length. You can find the code on github.

I found numerous posts in the WordPress forums about this issue. I really wish the authors would address is. Presumably all they’d have to do is to incorporate the code above into the plugin itself.

Thanks so much for sharing this! I just incorporated the extra code into my site as well.
