• I have been asked to assist a local non-profit in upgrading their WordPress installation from v4.9.19 to the current version.

Would we expect the one-click install to work properly over this wide a gap between the old version and the new? Are there any known issues that we should be aware of?

I will, of course, be making a full database plus files backup before we start. The site is using UpdraftPlus for automated backups, but for major version upgrades, I always prefer to have my own backup close at hand.

    Thanks…

    JGB

  • Hello. ??

Automatic update should work just fine. It has been known to work when updating from v2.0 to v5.0. And right now there are no known issues.

Great job having the backups available. While nothing is likely to happen, it’s always a good practice.

    Best wishes!

By the way your title says “to 5.9”

Please note the current version is 5.8.3

5.9 is still in RC2 version.

The final release of 5.9 is expected near the end of this month

This doesn’t seem to be good advice. My WP 4.9 runs under PHP 5.2, but WP 5.9 does not. And WP 5.9 runs under PHP 7.4, but WP 4.9 does not. It’s not necessarily true that you can one-click upgrade from 4.9 to 5.9.
