on achieving rollback without ftp

  • I have been thinking about the rollback problem and how it is challenging for some users because of ftp. Here is my solution:

    In the main plugin file and the readme.txt file of 1.9.13 change the identity of NextGEN Gallery to NextGEN Gallery Classic. Upload this “new” plugin to the WordPress plugin repository.

    When a user needs to rollback he can deactivate NextGen Gallery, use WordPress to download, install and activate NextGEN Gallery Classic. So this is the familiar user friendly WordPress install process. Now he can also conveniently switch between the two by deactivating one and activating the other.

    NextGEN Gallery Classic now that is an oxymoron that’s kind of funny.

    But, there are some disadvantages to consider – this essentially creates another product with its own web-page – its own forums. Still it may be nice to have NextGen Gallery Classic around for a while. Should have mentioned this in my original post.

    I think this is a great idea that would solve a lot of head-aches for many people.

    I also think it would be good for the reputation for Photocrati and WordPress.

    I never had the opportunity to say so before your previous thread Is it ethical… was closed but I liked the way you both demonstrated that you have the greatest respect for the developers and understand the pressure they are under but that you also in plain language supported all the newbies that are using WordPress.

    @magenta Cuda: Thanks for the suggestions. We actually have thought about this. There are some technical concerns we’d really need to work out, and getting this set up, approved, and in the repository would take time. For now, we still think the best strategy is to keep pushing forward and resolving issues as fast as possible.

    By the way, I saw another post from you in another thread before it was closed and didn’t have a chance to respond. In that thread, I really wasn’t intending any disrespect in my comments about rolling everyone back not being that easy. It’s obvious you know what you’re doing, and you’ve been very balance in your feedback. I was just pointing out that trying to revert the main NG plugin back to 1.9.x at this point would be very challenging, which you already know.

    @surocharg and anyone else who wants to roll back but isn’t comfortable with FTP: I mentioned this to you in another thread and I’ll mention it here. If you send us FTP credentials, I or one of our team members will roll you back.

    I don’t think there are a lot of people in this position, but if you are, that’s the least we can do.

    If you want to take advantage of that offer, please just send a bug report and say “Erick said you could help us roll back to 1.9.13, here’s our FTP and WordPress credentials”.

    So, how about:

    Download 1.9.13

    Unzip.

    Edit text file.

    Zip back up.

    Deactivate 2.x

    Use the Install Plugin, upload function.

    Activate 1.9.x

    Leave 2.x deactivated.

    I am looking for an answer on this too. This has been the biggest plugin headache problem we have had in the history of using wp.

    Instead of “Edit text file” I would rename the folder “nextgen-gallery” to “nextgen-gallery-classic”. The crucial difference seems to be the name of the folder and not the plugin name. Anyway, tried your procedure and it worked. Your procedure also has the advantage of easily switching between 1.9.13 and 2.0.7 by alternatively deactivating one and activating the other.
