OMG This is so not ready for a live site.

  • I love the concept of what you are trying to accomplish and I like the feel of the blocks but OMG this is so not ready for a live website. To edit an existing page is a nightmare not because I can’t figure out how to use it but because it crashes and freezes alot. Then takes me to the posts admin navigation. When I go back to pages and click edit to edit a page it crashes. So I deleted the page thinking maybe it was a bad page. Tried to create a page and it will never save or publish. The link to the classic editor doesn’t work. Gutenberg has crashed another live website in the sense of actually creating content. We have worked for over a year and now total stand still.

    Gutenberg I love the concepts and where it is going but this wasn’t ready at all and should not have been pushed out. We spend several thousand per year to run our websites and honestly this is the first time we are thinking of looking for another CMS. We love wordpress but this is likely the straw that breaks the camels back for us. Not cool at all. Not Cool!

    UPDATE: Since the recent WP update many of the challenges I was running into have been resolved. In having to rebuild some pages I installed a few block addons like Stack and Atomic. I have since deleted 7 Plugins… Yes 7 Plugins have been replaced. This is great for the website builder as the load speeds are noticeably different. Gutenberg is impressive. I still wish they would have waited a bit longer before launching but after several days of using it and the recent update things are running much smoother thanks to Gutenberg. We should see a more secure wordpress in the future also with so much coming stock with WordPress.

    Hm, that’s certainly odd. I’m not running into any crashing myself.

    This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Seventeen theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

    If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

    As for Classic Editor, the link is definitely not broken for me either, but you can install it via Plugins > Add New in your site’s Dashboard by searching for “Classic Editor”.

    The part about redirecting to the posts screen sounds strange to me, I’d like to know more about that. First though, the part about not being able to save or publish sounds to me like you may have something in your server setup (or a security plugin like James alluded to) that is blocking the REST API. Is that something you are able to check on? A basic check would be to add wp-json to the end of your site URL and make sure a big text response comes through and not an error.

    I’d like to help you figure this out! Is there any chance you’ve created a help request in the forums or elsewhere about this with more detail already?

    Link to Classic Editor had a bug which appears to have been resolved with Classic Editor 1.2.

    Thank you all for the tips and plugins and examples. This will help many people troubleshoot and debug. In my case after ranting I took a break from it all. Took a deep breath and dug in to find the problems. It was a plugin related issue that was up to date with the prior latest version of wp but not WP5.0. The issue was specifically related to old pages that had a shortlink in them. They worked fine before but for whatever reason upon editing those pages Gutenberg did a self check and freaked out. Which freaked me out.

    It should be a backwards compatible release but plugin makers had ample time to get their code ready I guess. Still aggrevating. Here was my solution which worked so far.

    I copied the text to a note pad and saved as plain text and saved that with the title and original permalink and short code. I then deleted the page. Removed from trash. Then went and recreated the page and included the shortlink into the shortlink block. Made sure the title and permalink was the same for seo. So why didnt I remove the shortlink from the original page and add it to a shortlink box? I did just that but still was unable to save or publish. The recreated page published fine with no issues. There is definitely a conflict between gutenberg and editing existing pages that causes a complete lag and crash. It appears to me to have been an issue with gutenberg trying to switch between the old editor and the new block style. I Have noticed on some other pages and posts that some pages were auto loaded in the old editor when attempting to edit. But why after the freeze up and crash when I went to all pages and clicked edit was I taken to all posts? No idea on this one. Still trying to recreate this. As of now I am fine as long as I do not edit any old pages with short codes in them.

    Thanks again I’m sure they will get things worked out in the next update. Just frustrating. We do allow user front end blog posts and so far they have had limited issues and mainly with images being cropped off.
