Hi! I didn’t find the answer to my issue in the forums, so I thought I’d post my question on its own. First, I’ll come right out and say that I am a writer, not a programmer. I found a template I loved ages ago and managed to very, very carefully follow instructions I found here to add my own header and whatnot to it, then I promptly left well enough alone.

I loved my template, which I currently have off and miss greatly. The new WP was easy to install, but it doesn’t like my old template.

Is there any place with step by step instructions for the css/php challenged in what needs to be modified in each file to make my old template work?

If you need me to, I can turn my template on again and link it here, but basically, the sidebar is just… not showing at all and the single post pages are all, um, wonky.

It is a basic two-column based on Kubrick with a “default all sidebar” feature to show the sidebar on any page just like it looks on the front page.

    Help!

  • Maybe you could define a bit more precisely what “old” and “new” means for you; e.g. using version numbers for WP.
Also, pre-1.5 versions had templates; since 1.5 til today we have themes (that are built using many template files).

It would help us to know more details.

Well, I started using Word Press in Summer 2006, switching from Blogger, so…. maybe v 2.06?? And being a css/php infant I call everything templates, sorry… I should have said theme.

I never upgraded WP over the last few months, I only upgraded now because it was a major release.

I have 7 blogs, 5 of which use the same themes as before the upgrade just fine, 1 of which I wanted a new look anyway so I didn’t care that it stopped lookng the same and this one, which I’d like to learn how to fix.

I turned it on again so you can see the issue, esp. in the side bar! It’s gone, like it has been cut off half way through.

There was nothing in the WP 2.1 (what you called “major release”) that should have forced you to do a rushed upgrade.
Non-technical users should NOT upgrade – yet. (this is strictly my personal opinion… but judging by the number of questions around here, I might be right)
I know, it’s too late – just for future reference.

As for the theme: it’s always a challenge with customized themes that nobody knows what their code is, so it’s difficult to tell what the problem is. In theory, most of the themes should work even with WP 2.1…

Y’ALL ROCK here in the forums! That nifty web tool found the error – it was a plug in’s code. I removed the old code, found the new code, put it in, and easy-peasy back in business! THANK YOU!
