I hid and password protected a WordPress site five years ago. No one has accessed it since, but today everyone who signed up for notifications five years ago received many emails that the old posts were now new. I don’t see any signs of hacking (no new users, checked with the hosting company), but how could this happen? Where are those notifications being controlled? They stopped after sending the initial 13 messages or so, but I don’t want this to happen again and need an explanation. Thanks!

You may be using a plugin for notifications — plugin such as Jetpack, etc.

It was an error from Jetpack. It somehow synced the posts five years after they were posted and pushed out a bunch of notifications.
