It would be helpful if plugins that are old, stale and abandoned are removed from the plugin directory.

I was just looking at a few plugins that sounded great, but they were 6 and 4 years since the last updates.

It would be helpful that if a plugin is 12 months since an update is marked as stale with the developer informed of the new status, then those over 18 months are either suspended or removed as being abandoned.

Having a fresh plugins directory would be helpful and would encourage developers of plugins to keep their plugins up to date.

  • That sounds good for some plugins, but not all.

One particular plugin that I use a lot is very simple, and because of that it hasn’t needed any updates on arund 3 years now. It still works perfectly, it still has no (known) vunerabilities and it still does everything that it’s meant to. Your propsal would have that thrown out of the repository, even though it’s still perfectly good. The problem is… how do you determine what should and should not be kept, based purely on age or time since last updated?

Is it not too much to ask the developer to check in and update that it is still active/developed/up to date with the latest version of WP?

But yes I see your point. That said is the plugin you mention still supported?

For me, it is the case of choosing a plugin that fills my need, but then discovering it is no longer supported. Just more time-wasting.

I appreciate that developers rarely get paid (unless they commercialise it as a pro etc version) for their work and it may seem like a big ask, but surely an annual or 6 monthly login to check their plugin works with the latest WP version. Thus confirming it is still a supported plugin.

    Sometime, yes.

No one gets paid here ever. Everyone is a volunteer doing this out of the goodness of their heart and as a gift to the opensource community.

The plugins page is not a store or market place. Plugins that have not been updated to at least say they work with the current version of WordPress will be down voted (not the right phrase) or show get a lower search return in a plugin search on your WordPress dashboard.
