OK to Change Permalinks on 3 year old site?

    I just learned about the “WP Super Cache” plugin and tried to install it on all 3 of my WP blogs. It wouldn’t activate & gave this error message:
    “Permlink Structure Error — A custom url or permalink structure is required for this plugin to work correctly.”

    I found lots of tutorials on how to change my permalink structure and I’m willing to do this. But, since these sites are between 2 & 3 years old, with lots of people linked to them from their sites, I’m worried that changing the permalinks will destroy the ability of people to get in using the old links.
    Any advice on this? Thanks in advance!
