I have a client who is running into an issue where despite every blog post having a featured image set, the OG:image is ignoring it and either pulling an image from the post or the default image (set in Social > Facebook).

Ex 1: This blog post https://tenaybenes.com/god-heals-the-painful-knees-of-my-bible-study-buddy/ had a featured image https://i0.wp.com/tenaybenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/34eff0b4-c2cb-4996-be5d-0df5224ca44c.png but the OG image is pulling this image from the body of the post https://i0.wp.com/tenaybenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/img_6334.jpg

Ex 2: This blog post https://tenaybenes.com/is-refined-sugar-a-neurotoxin/ has a featured image but is pulling the default image https://i0.wp.com/tenaybenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/2019-Tenay-Honeymoon-Portrait.jpeg

She primarily uses the WordPress mobile app to create her posts because she is on the go, so she doesn’t always have the ability to set a custom open graph image. And technically she shouldn’t have to because if I understand the order of operations, the featured image should be next in line.

WordPress and plugins are all up to date and there appear to be no conflicts. Her featured images meet the size requirements, so I’m not sure what could be the issue.

It’s worth mentioning that every once in a while the correct image is pulled, but the incorrect image is being pulled far more often than the correct one. I’m at a loss at how to provide an explanation to my client. All she wants is the featured image to show up when her post is shared on social.

How can I get this fixed?

I’m checking in to see if there is any solution to this problem? I noticed a plugin update just happened but it still didn’t fix the issue.

Hello Cristina,

Thanks for reaching out about the og:image. I believe the Yoast SEO plugin is working as expected; it is not a bug.

The og:image first defaults to a user-defined image (Facebook image) in the Social tab of the Yoast metabox for the post. If that is not found, it then picks the featured image for the post. If you do not want the Facebook image uploaded in the metabox to be used, you can skip defining one and the plugin will pick the featured image.

Appreciate you getting back to me, @maybellyne but I think you misunderstood my original issue.

I’m aware of the order in which the OG:image is pulled. The problem was even though my client set a featured image, the OG:image was not pulling it. Instead, it was pulling either an image from the body of the post or the default one set in the Yoast social settings.

However, it appears this issue has since been fixed with the latest plugin update. After the update, my client published a blog post and it appeared it still wasn’t fixed. Upon further inspection, it was because she set a featured image that was too small because once I swapped in a larger one everything was working as it should.
