offset a category

  • Hi people
    Basically my problem lies here.
    query_posts(cat=3,4&showposts=8&offset=1

    how can I change this code so that the offset query only applies to category 4 and not category 3. That is all posts in category 3 is shown but the first post from category 4 is not shown (offset)
    please help
