Odd validation error

I’ve just started getting a validation error “Please make sure all of the following required fields are filled out correctly: FIRSTNAME”, even although that field is correctly filled in. When I change the field in “form format” from #REQ_FIRSTNAME to just #_FIRSTNAME, the form is submitted, and contents of the first name field are recorded. Why would making it a required field cause it not to validate properly?
