I am finding that some HTML newsletters, when received, have some– only some– hyperlinks that fail. The markup on the original source in the newsletter WP HTML editor page shows that the links are properly formed. Yet, strangely some work, some don’t. Some end up with strange href content that points back to the originating site.. not what shows in the originating content. Some hyplinks don’t show up as hyperlink text at all… just plain text. What is going on with this?

    Thanks! Bob

OH, I should have mentioned these failed hyperlinks are in EMAILed (published) newsletters from the ALO EasyMail Newsleteter pluggin. The newsletter as displayed in a WP page is fine– all the hyperlinks work as intended. Somewhere in the email chain the hyperlinks get fiddled in some way.

Probably your cause is a known issue. The newsletter html can be rendered by several email clients and each client can render the html in an own way, not all the clients follow the same standard.
As you said, the links are ok in newsletter online page. Please check the same newsletter in different clients, you should see the links ok in some clients (the most of them) and broken links in some clients.

I think I found the problem. It may have been introduced in a c. November 2015(?) update to the ALO EasyMail plugin. There is a function to parse the outgoing HTML and manipulate URLs for making TrackBacks. This seems to not be working correctly, because some hyperlink tags are completely stripped. Others simply don’t redirect to the intended target, but do point back to the originating WP application. I stubbed out the function code so that no filtering occurs and the HTML is simply passed through. This should fix the problem.
