    hi,
i’m using the latest version of wordpress on my blog, https://www.bunteponys.com
it looks fine on a mac on all browsers but on a pc (ie explorer 6 windows 2000) the sidebar appears at the bottom of the blog not on the side.
i have searched everywhere for help regarding this problem and have not been able to find a working solution.
can anyone else using a pc with different set_up please let me know if the sidebar is shown correctly at the side…
i’m hoping that maybe this is just a problem with windows 2000 and ie explorer 6.0…
    thanks for your advice..
    toby

  • This is probably the most common problem reported on this forum, so I’m surprised you haven’t found anything.

Usually the problem arises because there’s some content element (usually an image) that’s wider than its container. So I’d check all those images you have in your main content and make the largest ones a bit smaller.

    thanks haecceity,
i know it’s a common problem and that’s why i searched everywhere and tried everything (apart from reinstalling the theme and starting again) before posting here.

all images conform to size regulations.
i even used the word break text in the header, no change.

    can anyone help, please…?

another problem, this theme is supposed to use a drop shadow, do you see it? i don’t… thanks.

A drop shadow on the images? No, I don’t see that on Firefox /OS X.

As for your sidebar, some of your images seem to go right up to the edge of the content area — that’s still where the finger of suspicion points for me. When you factor in margins and padding they may well be throwing off IE.

Where do these “size regulations” come from, incidentally?

thanks for your advice, i’ll re-install the theme and reprogram it tonight… and i’ll check padding and margins, which i haven’t changed…

    problem solved.
came home, booted xp on my macbookpro.
using ie explorer 7.0, website shows up properly.
that’s all i needed to see.
oh well… no blog in the office, maybe better so…
    thanks for your help, toby

The sidebar’s still at the bottom on IE7/Win2000, so I’m not sure how your problem’s solved.

    Apologies, that was IE6/WIN2000

i have solved the problem by deciding to ignore the problem.
the blog works fine in every browser on pc/mac apart from ie6/win2000.
so, my solution is update your browser and your system.
i have to use win 2000/ie 6 combination in the office because they’re still stuck in the stone age but that’s no reason to split my brain trying to find a problem that’s most probably linked to ie6 and the way it translates php, css, html etc
i give up, the blog is looking good and i’m happy… no more sleepless nights for me ??

    Fair enough!

i’m not sure how but i corrected the problem.

i validated the css at w3.org, corrected all the errors and problems and today the website shows correctly in ie6/ win 2000.

the css that was provided with the theme was full of errors and warnings but after validating and checking each and every line of text, things are working properly…

i didn’t have to change the size of any pictures and even added a drop shadow action to posted images…
