Object Cache Transients broken

With the object cache enabled, my admin interface would take 4 seconds or more to load because it would hit a bunch of URLs checking for plugin updates.

Digging deeper, I found out it was because the object cache wasn’t storing the transients and so it would check for updates every pageload.

Disabling the object cache resulted in a much, much better admin experience.
