Number of posts (counts)

i am wondering what it means when your plugins says “7.000 posts found..” when analyzing.
Does it count the posts, the attachments or just the media-files?

Fact: my website only has around 850 posts.
But probably it got a lot of (maybe orphaned)attachments and unluckily a lot of double images (it is a migration from an old XT-commerce shop)

Despite the question above:
Do have a recommendation how i can get rid of the old and unused attachments?
