• I am concerned about the optimal number of (add_image_size) images created. A couple of years ago, a plugin author wrote: “Having multiple images sizes of the same ratio is also not a bad thing as it allows more image sizes to be in the same srcset for an image, giving users on various screen sizes an optimal and faster experience.

On responsive sites, I believe that this is true, but where does more images cross into being, “Too much of a good thing?” Taken to extremes one could have dozens and dozens of sizes for each image, and at what point does server loading and other considerations outweigh the benefits of having images that are sized to each situation and device?

While there is no doubt that there can not be a hard and fast rule that specifies a finite number, is there a general rule? For instance, with standard breakpoints of 992 and 768, and a page width from 360, or so, and 1200, or so, as the top, one should have about X number of sizes, and this would give great responsiveness and image load times.

Or a URL that covers this? I can’t find one.

    Thanks so much!

I’ve not come across any such guidance. What’s appropriate will vary by site, theme, and target user base. Available technology will also be a factor. For example, when Retina displays came out, suddenly images should ideally be twice as large as before. I think there are too many variables to create guidance that would be universally meaningful. Use your best judgement for a given situation.
