i’ve just noticed that the number of email subscribers to my blog, which was previously over 2,000, has suddenly plummeted to 144. As far as i know i’ve done nothing to cause this (in recent times i’ve simply been posting and occasionally updating plugins as usual), and i’ve only ever used Jetpack to manage subscribers, so i’d really like help to understand what’s happened. A quick check on the Wayback Machine shows the usual figure (2,154 subscribers) earlier this month:

i’m guessing that 2,000 people haven’t all decided at once to unsubscribe! Can anyone help? Are all those subscribers lost, or can i somehow salvage their information from the database and reinstate them?

i just had a thought: could this number reduction be because of the removal of the Twitter API when sharing new posts? My Twitter has around 2,000 followers, roughly the number that this has reduced by! Surely this is the answer?

Can anyone confirm this is the likely answer? If so, presumably there are many people who will see the number of subscribers go down due to the removal of Twitter from WordPress.

It sounds like you’re using a Jetpack Subscribe block somewhere on your site. That block has an option to include connected social media followers in the total follower count shown. You can learn more about that here: https://jetpack.com/support/jetpack-blocks/subscription-form-block/

Since Twitter is no longer connected to Jetpack, those followers will no longer be shown. You can learn more about that here: https://jetpack.com/blog/the-end-of-twitter-auto-sharing/

The number of email subscribers/followers has not changed. Rather, the total number of followers (email subscribers + connected social media followers) shown in the Jetpack Subscribe Block has changed. You can find your total number of email subscribers/followers by logging into your WordPress.com account, and going to Users > Subscribers.
