    Hi,

at some point last year the comment section changed so that an author for a comment can’t have an incorporated number in their name. For example an author name like pi3rre, is rejected and triggers a message: “forbidden – number in author name not allowed = pie3rre”.

I (temporarily) disabled all plugins, but still this behaviour persists. I can’t find a setting anywhere in WordPress. How can I disable this setting so incorporated numbers are allowed in author names again?

    Kind regards.

Maybe try and see if this article has anything worthy. Might lead you to a solution

Thanks for your suggestion Steff. This article promotes a plugin “Restrict Usernames Emails Characters” which restricts usernames if registering. It does not mention where restriction on comment_author_names are located in WordPress itself, so I may bypass them.

Nevertheless, I tried if this plugin also worked on the comment-section and if it let me bypass the restriction on numbers/ digits in a comment_author_name I mentioned, but sadly it didn’t.

    Hello @dwaastoo,

can you please list plugins and themes installed?

    Hi 404-survivor

    Theme: uncode

Plugins: akismet, solid backups, wp-rocket, word fence. (Yet, the behaviour persists with all plugins deactivated).

Do you suspect/ know this is not a setting within WordPress itself?

    Kind regards

    Hey @dwaastoo,

well after messing with your issue for some time, I got the answer.

This plugin “Stop User Enumeration” is the reason. you might had this installed in past and since this plugin does sometimes give me issues when it’s not deactivated even when clicking on ‘deactivate’.

So I would suggest that you install it, navigate to its settings page and then Uncheck the option where it says “Remove numbers from comment authors”. This will solve your problem.

After unchecking and confirming, you can deactivate the plugin.

    Hi surviving404,

Thx for your work and respons. I never had this plugin installed.
Yet, I installed it, unchecked the option you mentioned, confirmed, deactivated and deleted.

However, sadly, it was to no avail.

I didn’t add any plugins around the time this behaviour started.

    Hey,

As far as I have concluded that plugin was the final culprit, you should contact that plugin’s support. Maybe they can help you out.

    (@macmanx)

@surviving404 That plugin could not have been the culprit, because as they have now mentioned twice, they didn’t have it installed.

While we value volunteer help here, we’re all volunteers after all, we ask that you please take steps to ensure that your answers are, at the very least, accurate. Otherwise, you take time away from the people who need help and opportunity away from the people who can.

@dwaastoo I’m sorry for the diversion, let’s get back to actually fixing the problem you’re facing.

I’m unable to reproduce the issue on my sites, so let’s start by ruling out the third-party elements.

Please attempt to deactivate all plugins (I know you mentioned that you already did this, but let’s give it one more shot just to be sure) and switch to the default Twenty Twenty-Three theme. If the problem goes away, re-activate them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to deactivate all plugins and change the theme for you while you’re still logged in without affecting normal visitors to your site.

    Hi James,

Thank you for your extensive feedback and troubleshooting tips. I did as you asked and finally isolated the source.

As it turns out, I previously overlooked one of the plugins, “really simple ssl”. I don’t know why, but somehow I was under the impression it was part of the obligatory-Uncode-theme-plugins (foolish me) so it became a blind spot. Anyway, this plugin had a setting ‘stop user enumeration’.

I don’t know how I overlooked that, sorry for using all of your times for such a trivial problem.

    Best regards,

    Hey,

Thanks for clarifying. I am glad you found the solution, I also took a look and now it works fine. ??

    Regards
