now with added backslashes!

I’m working with a friend to install WP and Kubrick on his server. For whatever reason when a user enters an apostrophe ” ‘ ” it is parsed out as a backslash ” \ ” and what’s completely disco is as the abused title is commented upon, the backslashes begin to multiply.
is there a way to strip this out of WP (rss and html) ?
or better yet, is there a way to stop this at the server level?
