You need to increase your user level so that you have author priviledges. Log in as admin to manage users.

I installed all the files, which work, registered and logged in to index.php, and updated my profile. But my website still reads My Weblog with introductory material, and can only update my profile, log in, and view My Weblog.
Is there another file I should access, or a problem in wp-config.php?
I don’t have any interface to post. I’m ready to start changing my stylesheet.
Where should I log in as admin? There’s no such link available to me after I log in on index.php.

When you finished the installation process, you would have been given a random password for the admin account. If you didn’t write it down or you have lost it, you can reset the admin user password by following the instructions in the wiki here.
Once you’ve logged in as the admin, you’ll have a whole heap of new options available to you. First thing you should do is increase the userlevel of your user that you intend to post with to at 9. Leave the admin user as the only user with a level of 10 so that if anything goes wrong in the future, its easy enough to fix it.

go to the usual login page, user the username “admin” and the password that was provided for admin when you installed the blog. If you forgot your admin password, then, if it is a fresh install of wordpress, search these forums for a fix to a problem with resetting the admin password.

I deleted and reloaded my files again–much quicker this time–I loaded the install page, but got no code. I registered with admin and random, but now it tells me this is already being used.

I have tried every combination of usernames and pws, including whats on the wp-config.php. All I do is either create new users at 0 level or nothing happens! The screen just reverts back to the empty login prompt. Or I get the message that the login is already in use. I’m locked out of my own blog!

I did that!
The prompt reverts to empty!

when you installed wordpress did you get a randomly generated password like “d652de” or something similar?
Use the username admin and that password to Log In, not to register, at the wp-login.php page. Fill in the login form, like the one at https://2fargon.com/wordpress/wp-login.php on your own website.

Have you tried clearing your browser’s cache? Or launching with a different browser than your default browser. Sometimes that clears things up.

I don’t recall getting a password the first time, and I definitely didn’t get one the second time when I uploaded the files in a different directory. None of my wp-config info has changed, so I guess I’m screwed, unless I can divine that password somehow. Is there a way to get that password again? Who do I contact?
