A very strange problem. I had a report that the notification emails wasn’t received for an order. I verified this so installed WP Mail Log plugin and resent the notifications for the last 4 orders. Two of which were not sent, two were.

    The not sent are consistent.

    What could possibly cause this?

No emails, yes, I accept there are many logical reasons, all emails sent, yes, good but some sent and some not? truly bizarre.

Further to this, I changed the billing email address and it sent.

The mail log error was “Could not instantiate mail function” which I know can be related to phpmailer authentication errors – but why sometimes!

    Hi @wizcomhosting,

Typically, issues like this are due to an issue with the PHPmailer email server. This is a common issue with most web servers as they’re not optimized to send emails.

I’d recommend using a SMTP plugin as they’re known to help with WordPress email issues.

You can learn more about troubleshooting email and SMTP in our Email FAQ

    I hope this helps.

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved – if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.
