    I noticed when I get an email notification from a WordPress plugin the email header looks something like this:

    from: My company/website name
    <my personal name@company name.com>
    reply-to: my [email protected]
    to: my [email protected]

    Is “my personal name@company name.com” something WordPress creates in lieu of using my admin email address as the From address? I tried sending an email to that address and it got bounced back with an Address not found message. It looks like that phantom email uses the username of my admin email address, correct?

  • There are two issues here.

    First, by default, all emails from your WordPress site should come from WordPress <[email protected]>, example.com being the site address.

    WordPress does not offer mailboxes and does not create this address. It simply does not exist. That’s why the “reply-to” is used.)

    (Aside: note that sender email address does not have to exist… this is one of the loopholes spammers use to spoof emails to appear like they’re coming from someone else.)

    The second issue is that it seems you used some plugin to change the “From” name and email address (either for sitewide emails or for the specific plugin’s emails)… as what you’re seeing is not WordPress’ default.

    So whether your custom “From” address [email protected] exists or not — that’s not something anyone can answer for you. And WordPress would have nothing to do with that, as WordPress doesn’t have mailboxes and cannot create any real email accounts.

    Thanks for the info. It appears both plugins have opted to use the “my personal name@company name.com” email address instead of the default “[email protected]”. That’s OK with me since the address they’re using is undeliverable. If anyone tries to use it for spam, it won’t work.
