Not writing pages

I’ve installed WP and the main page of the blog works fine but permalinks only works for default (even then, the RSS feed etc., do not work. Every page returns a 404 – category pages, posts, about page, etc. I checked with the host and mod_rewrite is enabled. I’ve set .htaccess. I’ve switched to default, then back again to permalinks as some have suggested. Nothing is working. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you.
