Hi! I have my blog on Siteground servers – https://comunicacionabierta.net – and it’s ages I would love to make ActivityPub to work on it.

I’ve tried with the Webfinger plugin and everything but nothing yet…

Technical support from Siteground tells me that if I can explain whay should be changed from the server side maybe they can help me doing it.

Have you heard about this before? Any ideas what could it be?

    Thanks!

It is still the issue that siteground is blocking the .well-known URLs https://comunicacionabierta.net/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct%3Adanicotillas%40comunicacionabierta.net

In most of the cases this is because hosters use the .well-known setup of lets-encrypt and are too restrictive with it.

Oh, bad news then. Is there anything I could tell to the tech support so they stop blocking it? Any technical recommendation?

I guess they do that for security reasons but maybe there is a way to allow it just for ActivityPub.

    Thanks!

The plugin generates a rewrite rule for .well-known/webfinger and .well-known/nodeinfo , so there is no “physical” folder, it simply rewrites the requests of these endpoints to the index.php file.

Well-Known is a RFC standard https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc5785 and there are quite some URIs registered https://www.iana.org/assignments/well-known-uris/well-known-uris.xhtml and not all of them are system but application specific (for example WebFinger, OpenID, dnt-policy.txt, change-password, …) so hosters should not block them completely.

This is the background, maybe it helps when contacting Siteground ??

    They tell me this:

As I understand it, there is a problem with accessing the .well-known folder. Note that .htaccess rewrites will not work because the request is served directly from the Nginx service. Our configuration implementation for the .well-known directory allows us to complete different system tasks such as the validation process during the issuance of Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates, for example.

I’m afraid we can’t make changes to the above configuration. You should check with plugin support if it is possible to use a custom directory instead of .well-known as this will not work with our current configuration.

Then I have bad news for you ??

Mastodon requires WebFinger and WebFinger needs the .well-known URI. It’s part of the spec, so there is no chance to do it differently!

    I am very sorry ??

All right! Thanks a lot for your time!

I talked to Siteground on the WordCamp Germany and got a contact, to discuss the issue. I hope we can find a solution!

Terrific news!!!! I look forward to hear back again!

    Thanks!

Jumping on this as having a similar issue. Again I appreciate the problem here is Siteground. It’s not mission critical but very hopeful of a solution ??

No luck. They won’t do it ??

I gave my best, but this means that it does not work on Siteground!

Well at least you tried and that’s already a lot! Thanks a million!

I’m gonna start looking for another host for my blog so I can profit of this plugin.

That’s frustrating. No problem Matthias. Thanks for your persistence. ??

    I may drop them a message as a user…
