• I am using WordPress 4.5.2, localhost, evolve theme. Just installed Turbo Widgets today and have a couple of issues.

1 – when inserting a widget using the insert button the list of widgets available does not show my already created text widgets as options to add

2 – the only page alignment seems to be vertical and I really need it horizontal

    Hey @rookie,

    1) I’m afraid that is not currently a feature. I do like the idea so I’ll add it to the backlog.

    2) I’m currently working on alignment on widgets via the GUI, though this may end up being a PRO feature only to begin with. If you’re comfortable with CSS then you should be able to style these as you like. I’d also be happy to take a look at an example and help you out with that if you send me a link.

thanks for the response. I can do without number 1 (assuming I can put graphics in the text box) but #2 is a bit of a non-starter. I’ve tried a lot of other widgets without any luck so far so I’m a bit stuck.

I’m not a CSS guy but can probably figure it out if you give me some help. I don’t have any example available but my design strategy was to put widgets showing different products (picture + small amount of text) on a page and then have the user click a widget to get more detailed info about a specific product. Each page would have a different number of these widgets (somewhere between 4 and 15) depending on the product category. As you can imagine, vertical alignment would not work very well.

    Hey again,

To be honest you’d be better off getting a template page written up to do what you want to list these products… that way you could include more functionality like filtering/ordering/categories etc. What tool are you using to manage the products?

    (@rookie59)

Not using any tools to manage the products. We’re not selling online and don’t really require much in the way of functionality. Our website is simply informational and we’re trying to give users a way to visualize our products without going throughout a typical menu structure.

I looked at some of the product cataloguing tools thinking I could use them for our objective but they all seemed a bit ‘ebayish’ if that makes sense.

Yeah sure… “right tool for the job” and all that. So are you’re products all stored in custom posts or anything? And which widget were you thinking of using?

I was playing around with the Black Studio TinyMCE but not tied to it.

We are moving from a drupal-based website and don’t have much experience with wordpress. We’re finding that some of the things we take for granted we probably shouldn’t.

Ah right… so each product is a new widget.

To be honest, depending on your requirements, there may be much better solutions. On being that you have a custom post type for your products, that way they will be more-aligned to the way WordPress stores “items of content” such as posts, pages… and products. Using this approach means you can make use of the built in functions in WordPress, such as search, listing the products in different manners, categories, etc, and it will give you a more scaleable, manageable solution. This isn’t the place to really discuss this, so please feel free to contact me via links in my bio.

If however, you’re happy with maintaining the products in widgets (though I advise against this), then let me know and I might be able to assist with some “getting started” CSS.

I was looking for a function that gave me a ‘containerized’ approach to displaying products and related info. I have been looking at lots of different types of wordpress functionality to give me the same type of control. If you don’t believe that your widget plugin is the right way to go, I have no argument. I haven’t found another method yet but assume I will stumble across a more appropriate approach.

I appreciate your time and feedback

No worries, and yes I feel that having you products as custom posts would be a very flexible solution, and one that made use of the existing data structure that WordPress gives you. Maybe take a look at the options here? Many of these will use/build on the approach I have briefly mentioned.

    Good luck with the site.
