Not work with protocol relative URLs

That is correct, the plugin supports relative paths but does not support the relative protocol identifier //.

I recommend to change the URL either to https://www.example.com/script.js or https://www.example.com/script.js

Why not? Can’t you add these? Very important in my opinion. A lot of plugins use relative protocol identifier and they make sense.
