The EU VAT Assistant from this repository doesn’t need additional plugins. Everything is bundled in it, as indicated in the guidelines for the public WordPress repository, and don’t have to install anything else, apart from the geolocation database.
If you are referring to the Aelia Foundation Classes as the “companion plugin”, if you received a prompt to install that framework it means that you’re running one of our other premium plugins. In any case, whether you use the EU VAT Assistant alone, or add the AFC framework separately, it will work correctly, as it can detect both of them automatically and use the most recent one.
About the geolocation database
The reason why the built-in framework asks to download the MaxMind geolocation database is that we use a different database from the one bundled with WooCommerce. Our plugins apply a logic to detect both country and state/province, which is something that the WooCommerce geolocation can’t do. Also, we implemented a geolocation feature over a year before the same functionality was added to the WooCommerce core (just like we did with many other features), therefore it made sense for us to keep using our own.
In short, there are valid reasons behind our design choices. ??
Finally, the URL of the geolocation database works just fine. We just checked it, to be sure. If you experienced some issues downloading that database, you can forward us the details via the public support forum, and we will look into it. Thanks.
