Not truly usable yet (beta), but this is the future

  • I love the idea, the system and the design of it. It’s not truly usable yet, but it is definitely a leap forward for WordPress. It’s awesome to unify the WordPress ecosystem around the same page builder and enhance it through plugins and I am looking forward to contributing to it. Hence my 5 stars. Of course, the plugin doesn’t deserve 5 stars in its actual state.

    One thing I didn’t understand: Why is the HTML code for the gallery auto-generated on the fly, in the editor?

    Also, is there somewhere we can see the list of filters?

    Is Gutenberg going to support a grid system?

    Well, without WordPress filters, Gutenberg would be a total failure so for me it is obvious that there will be filters. Filters to add new features, new components, options in standard components, etc.

    My first surprise was that when I inserted a gallery, I expected to see the shortcode for gallery: [gallery]. But instead, there was HTML, already generated. That totally goes against the WordPress logic, so I wondered if that was because Gutenberg was beta. As for now, the gallery shortcode can be managed by themes and plugins, styled differently, the content ordered depending on attributes and other events, etc…

    If the new way is to actually generate HTML directly, then it kills WordPress completely. It removes the fact that the galleries (for example), are dynamic, and can evolve through time easily.

    Is really Gutenberg really going to do this? If it does, of course, the plugin shouldn’t be part of WordPress as it kills the modularity of it. But I don’t think that it is what you are doing. The main idea of the plugin is too great to destroy it all by removing the ability to other plugins and themes to actually hook into the components.
