• I received an e-mail to update to the new wordpress a while back, so I logged in and clicked update wordpress, but then I get this message:

“The file ‘wp-config.php’ already exists. If you need to reset any of the configuration items in this file, please delete it first. You may try installing now.”

Then for some reason I couldn’t log in to WordPress anymore. It wouldn’t recognize my email. Even when I requested a new password, it would say that my email is not registered. So I registered my email again and created a profile.

Disclaimer: I don’t know anything about building websites or working with WordPress, I had a friend build my site, but now I lost contact with that friend, so I tried updating the site myself. So I have no idea on where I should start or what I should do. My website was working fine before I tried to update it. My head hurts from trying to read and watch YouTube videos on what I should do.

  • Hello, djretep, welcome to the WordPress support forum, & so sorry for the headache!

The first thing that would be really helpful is to provide us w/a site url.

The next thing that would be really helpful is if you’d paste your wp-config.php file, but *please* remove credentials such as database name, database username, & database password, as this is a public forum, & posting credentials here clearly poses a very significant security threat. The salt security keys also need not be posted.

Lastly, you may wish to log into your hosting control panel & see if more than 1 WordPress install exists. For some reason, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this were the case.

Please reply w/the requested info so we can help you better.

    Hello Jackie,

Thank you for your reply. My site is https://www.djretep.com

Where do I find the “wp-config.php” file?

Hello, djretep–you’ll need to look at your files, either using your host’s control panel file manager or an FTP client like FileZilla. I’ve had a look at your site, & it would appear that WordPress doesn’t have its own folder, so, wherever you see WordPress files is where you’ll find your wp-config.php. That might be public_html, htdocs, /, or other–unfortunately, there are no standards, so it’s not really possible to know for sure. I wish I could be more specific, but I really can’t.

I faced similar problem but solved by the post given in the link below. You can follow the post below. Solve error after wordpress install (The file ‘wp-config.php’ already exists)
