Not sure how to find out?

Hello,
I need to know if someone can build a website like Facebook with Word Press Mu? Yes, it would require some developing. I am just trying to figure out if the software will crash or create more issues. We have looked into Joomla, Drupal, and among others. Most of them we had a lot of issues with. We like how word press works with buddy press. With both of these can we develop a popular site?
