I am using the Email Log plugin to help with diagnostics.

I have proven that if I send a test email from Subscribe2 directly to my Public Subscribers only then it works as expected, my Public Subscribers receive the email.

However, when I add a new post to my site Subscribe2 is only sending to my Registered Users who are subscribed to the category of the new post, it is not sending to my Public Subscribers.

I cannot see what I am doing wrong or what I need to do to address this.

    Any help or guidance appreciated.

In the Subscribe2 > Settings page under the Registered Users tab, do you have any Excluded categories? And are Registered Users allowed to subscribe to these?

Are you using custom post types?

In the Subscribe2 > Settings page under the Email Settings tab, what is your setting where it says Restrict the number of recipients per email to?

Yes, I had Excluded all the categories for Registered Users because I only wanted to send to my Public Subscribers. I do not want to send to any Registered Users.

Removing these Exclusions and using Bulk Management to remove all the categories from my registered users seems to have resolved my problem.

I had not expected any of the registered user settings to alter the behaviour for my public subscribers.

It is looking good for now, I will do some more testing and come back if I have further problems.

Thank you very much for the prompt response.

I see. Excluded categories stops any posts from those categories generating an email. That is bypasses if the setting to allow registers users to subscribe to excluded categories is checked.

Removing the exclusion and bulk unsubscribing Registered Users should solve your issue.

Yes my issue is resolved, thank you.

May I suggest that some additional warning text is added the Excluded Categories section of the Registered Users tab making it clear that excluding any categories will stop email for the Public Subscribers as well as the Registered Subscribers.

    Thank you for your help.

There is some information in the Help tab already, but perhaps you are right and that could be made clearer and more helpful.

I second that !!! Once you know the above, you know. But I personally didn’t see this information anywhere (and I searched this topic !). All this is a little confusing at first. Unfortunately, your plugin isn’t very intuitive on some levels, and that could probably be improved.

For example, the “compulsory categories” seems to also apply to registered USERS (who haven’t subscribed), is that right ?

Or you can exclude categories, NOT select “Allow registered users to subscribe to excluded categories?”, but switch “Auto-subscribe includes any excluded categories” to YES. It then seems they WILL be able to subscribe to excluded categories (in fact they will directly be subscribed, but can unsubscribe and subscribe again later). What will this do to PUBLIC subscribers ? Yeah, a bit confusing ??

    @mevo

I’m always happy to take constructive feedback so thanks – I’d even happier to take code patches if you are in a position to submit those. ?? (If not, even some formatted text on here to paste into the Help tab would be really useful.

Yes, the Compulsory Category check boxes are under the Registered Users tab so they apply to Registered (and Public) subscribers.

Excluding categories and disabling the “Allow registered users to subscribe to excluded categories?” option would block all current registered subscribers from subscribing to that category.

If you checked the Auto-subscribe option that would only apply to new users but would be a counter intuitive array of settings – but possible for sure. I guess we could code around that but someone – somewhere may have a good reason to want that configuration.

Public Subscribers have no category level control over their email notifications. If they category is excluded it won’t send to them. If compulsory, it makes no difference as the notification will send to Public Subscribers anyway.
