I have a photography website so it’s important to me that the images not be degraded whatsoever in the optimization process. At least not to the eye.
So, here was the test that I did with the Smush plug-in. I really want your plugin to work, so would appreciate helping me understand what I am doing wrong.
This is the free version. So, I turn on optimize new images. I upload an image to my wordpress media library. I immediately see where the plugin shows an optimization savings. Great. Then I turn off the optimize new image slider in the plugin and upload the same image with the filename changed by 1 letter.

I then flush the cache of my browser. I open my website in a browser and then open the gallery with the optimized image. I open the optimized image and evaluate the image using the developer inspector element for the browser. It shows me the original size of the image and the size shown on the browser page.

I repeat this with the non-optimized image. There are no differences in the image size from the optimized image and the non-optimized image. I was expecting the optimized image to be smaller in the browser inspector page.

Am I doing something wrong in this test process?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hello @tucker501

    I hope you’re doing well!

A lite version of the Smush plugin is not optimizing originally uploaded images, it is optimizing thumbnails that WordPress created from an original image. Please make sure that you’re comparing thumbnails images in size.

    I hope this helps!

    Kind regards,

Thank you for taking the time to respond, especially to someone only using the free version.

My test was with new images, not originally uploaded images. When I uploaded the new image, I did see that the plug-in indicated a “savings” in optimization. Then I turned off the optimization of new images from the plug-in settings and put an identical image (different name) in the media library. I noticed that the plug-in, rightfully so, did not indicate that an optimization had occurred. This is what I expected since I had turned off optimize new images. Then I looked at both images on a live website page using the page inspector. Both images, the optimized one and the non-optimized one, was listed as same size in the browser element inspector.

I’m thinking I’m not doing this correctly.

I now understand. It only optimized the thumbnail, NOT the full sized image. I totally understand this now.

So, here’s my next pre-sales question. Since this is a photography site I don’t want to notice ANY changes in photo quality. Can I ask the pro version to just optimize 5 images instead of all of mine, in case I don’t like the results? Easy to put back 5 images, but not so easy to put back 300.

Secondly, I use a CDN provided by my hosting site. How will it work to use your CDN as well?

    Hi @tucker501,

Can I ask the pro version to just optimize 5 images instead of all of mine, in case I don’t like the results?

Yes, you can even do this with the free version. In the media library you can select individual images that you want to be compressed.

Secondly, I use a CDN provided by my hosting site. How will it work to use your CDN as well?

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use two CDNs at the same time.

    Best regards,
    Anton
