Not recognizing email and URL formats on some sites

On a few sites the add hyperlink function doesn’t recognize an email unless mailto: is explicitly added, nor a URL unless https:// is added. On other sites it recognizes them and asks if I want the proper prefix added.
Why does it work on some sites and not on others?
How do I get it to work on all sites?
