I’m not an expert by any means, but I built and manage the website for the business where I work (ziggysauto.com). I installed the free version of WordFence Security to help make the website more secure. (The site is on a shared hosting plan through BlueHost.) I got sick of customers not receiving emails from me and my guess was that it was due to the fact that the website is on a shared server. To solve this problem I upgraded to Google Workspace so that Google’s servers would handle my email. Since upgrading I no longer receive emails notifying me when WordFence has blocked an IP address for too many failed login attempts, etc. I have checked the Spam folder but they are not there. I just plain don’t receive them. Any ideas why this should be happening? If it helps, I also no longer receive emails from the UpdraftPlus plugin and iThemes Security plugin notifying me of various things.

    Hi @rebeccainmi,

It sounds like a mail handler either installed on your WordPress site or on the hosting space itself is either not working as intended or preventing the emails from being sent.

I would recommend you check the site’s PHP error logs at the times the emails should be sending. Since we don’t have any functionality that would actively block the sending of an email, an error of some sort must be occurring when the send is attempted. If you can provide any copy/pasted information about what you find, that would assist us in getting to the bottom of this for you.

Wordfence uses the same mail functions that are built into WordPress, so there is no technical difference between the way Wordfence, WordPress and most other plugins behave in sending those out. Do you find the emails start working again if Wordfence is disabled? If not, it could be worth reaching out to your hosts, or disabling your other plugins and re-enabling them one-by-one to see if any are having an impact.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

    Thanks for your reply, @wfpeter

I went to cPanel >> Advanced >> Metrics >> Errors and this is what it shows me:

The function displays the most recent entries in your website’s error logs in reverse chronological order. You can use this information to find broken links or problems with missing files.

Latest web server error log messages:

    [Sun Jul 25 21:38:38.900280 2021] [access_compat:error] [pid 958186:tid 23068965123840] [client 37.0.10.26:51328] AH01797: client denied by server configuration: /home3/ziggysau/public_html/wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_uploads/, referer: https://www.google.com
    [Sun Jul 25 21:35:02.002752 2021] [authz_core:error] [pid 960777:tid 23068923098880] [client 37.0.10.26:58895] AH01630: client denied by server configuration: /home3/ziggysau/public_html/wp-includes/error_log, referer: https://www.google.com
    [Sun Jul 25 14:01:45.742385 2021] [authz_core:error] [pid 65811:tid 23069009250048] [client 20.97.186.106:61436] AH01630: client denied by server configuration: /home3/ziggysau/public_html/wordpress/php.ini

That’s all it will show me, so if you need more than that I might have to ask the hosting company to supply me with additional information. (Unless you might be able to tell me how to get there, perhaps. I know enough to do some things, but by no means everything.)

Update: I decided to get on the support chat with the hosting company and the CSR was able to determine that “the issue was with the email router” and he updated it. I am now receiving emails from the website plugins like I was before. Thank you for your help @wfpeter ??

    Hi @rebeccainmi,

Thanks for the update, I appreciate it and am really pleased you were able to get the email router updated.

If you have any questions about Wordfence in future, please start a new topic and we’ll be glad to help out any time!
