• Why oh why does it make a new block everytime I hit return? I just want a paragraph. This update breaks the most basic functions of editing. I don’t know if it’s my theme or what but it does not play nice. Also when I converted all my text to html and then switched back to the editor it wrapped everything in DIVs instead of paragraphs!

  • In Gutenberg the block is the basic editing unit, hence “everything” is a block. A paragraph therefore becomes a block with individual properties.

Hitting return is by default meant to create a new paragraph, it does this in all major desktop grade text editors (Pages, Word, etc.), hence in Gutenberg it will create a new block, because all paragraphs are blocks.

If you don’t want to create a new paragraph there is always SHIFT+Enter which will simply create a newline in the current block/paragraph.

    What do you mean by:

    > when I converted all my text to html and then switched back to the editor

    How do you do that?
