This is by design – as WordPress only stores the URL of these, BNFW outputs them as such. Details of how to work with images are shown at the top of this page: https://betternotificationsforwp.com/documentation/notifications/shortcodes/As this is a function of WordPress as opposed to BNFW, would you consider updating your review based on the functionality of the entire plugin?
