Not Getting New User Notification Message

When a new user registers I am not getting an email notification. What do I need to check to make sure I have everything set properly?
I sell a product on my site and when a customer places an order I get the Authorize.net receipt. After purchase they are automatically logged in and taken to a specific page. Could this be a reason I am not getting the “new user notification email message?Thanks in advance – Sam
