As far as I can tell, this is not officially documented, but it worked for me:

    • Install FluentSMTP on multisite network
    • Enable plugin on main site only (i.e., do not network enable)
    • Configure plugin on main site
    • Main site and sub sites are sending mail using main site’s SMTP credentials. Dynamite!

I hope this is helpful. Thank you for the great plugin!

    Hello @alexanderbailey,

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention and for the kind words about FluentSMTP!

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience setting up FluentSMTP on your WordPress Multisite network. It’s fantastic to hear that you’ve found a configuration that works well for you.

I will surely notify our documentation team to add it to our official documentation. This will help other users benefit from this simplified setup.

Thanks again for your valuable feedback!

In all fairness, I discovered FluentSMTP (and the trick) by way of this blog post: https://adityaarsharma.com/how-to-use-smtp-email-in-wordpress-multisite-globally/.

Of course, I skipped the network-activate and then network-deactivate steps (by accident, because following directions is not one of my strengths). So, now we know that there’s no need to network activate the plugin at all.

    Thanks again!
