Not being allowed to use some terms in Add New Site

    The following words are reserved for use by WordPress functions and cannot be used as blog names: page, comments, blog, files, feed

    This is the error message that I’m getting. I wanted to use /blog as a sub-site in the network. What I require is that my site has the following structure:

    – Home (only contains links to the other parts)
    – Part 1
    – Part 2
    – Blog

    Would using permalinks solve my problem? I want all my blogs to appear in only the ‘Blog’ part of the site and nowehere else.

    Another follow-up query is that, since I’m working on this site on my localhost, I’m using sub-folders. But when I eventually transfer the site on a web host, I want to use sub-domains. I’m mentioning this as I fear that any solution to the above problem can influence this.

    Can’t, it’s a restricted name if you use SubFolders.

    So considering the structure of the site (Home, Part 1, Part 2, Blog) which are all ‘sub-sites’ (other than blog, from your reply), is there any way around this? I’m quite frustrated because of this restriction. ??

    Generally we suggest you use Subdomains, NOT subfolders.

    See, you CAN edit it (go into network admin -> Sites -> Edit and then change the permalinks there), but should you or anyone else EVER re-save the permalinks, it comes back (it’s hard coded into the page). Plus even with doing that, it’s STILL a restricted name if you’re using subfolders.

    Subdomains I would definitely use on the site when it’s hosted on the domain. Can’t use it in localhost ??

    I had saved my blog permalinks as ‘sitename/blog/postname’ in the site admin. As you say, I would not make a separate site in the network for blogs, but in the front end at least I need four microsites.

    So when I finally switch to the domain, I preferably want to find all my blogs at blog.sitename.com.

    The whole idea of the site is based around these pretty looking links so to speak. If this can’t happen, the site would fail. ??

    I would make a fake domain ipstenu.loc in my hosts file, and then manually map ‘blogs.ipstenu.loc’ etc.

    When I’m ready to move, just search/replace ipstenu.loc for ipstenu.org and have a party.

    Alright, this could be a long day. :/

    I allowed sub-domains on my host and pointed them towards individual directories in my wordpress folder. (“../htdocs/wordpress/part1” etc.)

    However, I’m clueless about installing Wildcard subdomains on my localhost. I added a line ServerAlias part1.localhost under ServerName localhost in each of the individual setups.

    After activating multisite in wp-config, I’m getting this message:

    Because you are using localhost, the sites in your WordPress network must use sub-directories. Consider using localhost.localdomain if you wish to use sub-domains.

    Any suggestions? Thanks again Ipstenu!

    Also wildcard subdomans don’t work on localhost.

    Try to keep all your issues in one thread.
