I set up Total Upkeep to do a back up twice a week, but I get notifications every few hours that a backup has been completed. Am I missing something?

    Hi @evetide0,

Thanks for reaching out with your Total Upkeep questions. The first thing we should do here is determine exactly what’s triggering the unexpected backups to run. It can help us understand if multiple backups are in fact completing at your backup destination, or if the issue is tied to something else triggering notifications to your email address.

What Triggered The Unexpected Backup To Run?

You can determine what triggered an unexpected backup to run by following these steps:

    1. Go to Total Upkeep > Backup Archives
    2. Click “View details” next to the backup in question
    3. On the right side of the page, click the “More info show” link. The “Backup triggered by” value will show you what caused the backup to run.

    Set Up Automatic WordPress Updates

From what I’ve experienced, the most common cause of the issue with Total Upkeep triggering unexpected backups is having the plugin configured to automatically back up the website before plugin and theme updates. The steps below explain how to set that up.

    1. In the Dashboard, Navigate to Total Upkeep → Settings
    2. Select Auto Updates
    3. Disable Auto Backup?before updates

You can also set this up in a way where automatic backups only occur when needed for core updates and important plugins.

    Additional Questions & Troubleshooting Tips

Are there any other websites on your server that might be running Total Upkeep as well? Perhaps a staging or development site? Any site on your server could be trigger backups which would send the same completion notifications to your email. This could definitely cause confusion and make it appear that your websites settings are misconfigured as well.

I’m also aware of a type of situation where you may have deleted the plugin at some point, but the system’s Cron jobs weren’t deleted. Your web host may have a tool to configure Cron jobs, or you can use the crontab -e command using SSH to double-check.

I really hope this helps @evetide0, please let us know if there is anything else that we can answer for you!

Thank you. I had autobackup before updates selected. I will try disabling.
