Recently I’ve noticed this plugin has been extremely inaccurate. I feel like it worked decently for a while, until a few very old, random, rarely read posts started showing up in my popular list. Posts that, according to Google Analytics or Jetpack, were barely viewed at all. And yet they appear at the top of the list.

Would love to see a fix for this, as there really is no comparable plugin I’ve found that I like as much as this one. I have a feeling it’s bots or something that is throwing off the count. Or even an option to link the wpp plugin to a Jetpack or GA stat account and pull the popular posts directly from there.

    Thanks!

Testing out v 3.0.0 on a development site, and I’m getting the following error (three times, one for each popular post that displays):

Warning: basename() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given in /home/loveando/public_html/dev/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-popular-posts-3.0.0-alpha-2/wordpress-popular-posts.php on line 2113

Only shows when I try to display a thumbnail. If I just display title/stats then it displays fine.

Ok, thanks for the notice! Will take a look and push a new version later today.

    Fixed, new alpha version available!

I am using the latest alpha version and I am noticing the count is still off considerably. In-fact, looking at the top 10 posts for Popular Post vs. Google Analytics and there are few similarities.

Did you clear WPP’s statistics, cwhebert?

I did. Cleared everything and started fresh.

I see, you’re right actually. Just checked the statistics on both WPP and GA and there’s a slight difference. I’ve been thinking about it and there are actually a few reasons why the data reported by the plugin will never be the same to what GA shows:

    • GA counts every view generated, even if you’re logged in to WordPress. WPP by default logs visits from non-logged in users only.
    • GA does not filter out visits generated when previewing a post. WPP does.
    • GA also counts visits to the homepage. WPP does not.
    • GA filters out visits by robots / spiders, while only WPP 3.0* does, and older versions of the plugin don’t.

    * There’s also the possibility that there are bots / crawlers / spiders that aren’t on the exclusion list yet, so WPP 3.0 will register their visits as valid ones. Since this feature (bot detection) is new and still under development and testing, this is to be expected.

I’ll keep an eye on it.

Someone reported that some time ago, but I don’t think it’s browser related since I was unable to reproduce it. It could be either theme-related, or another plugin causinga conflict.

There’s a new version under development now, could you please test it and let me know if the problem persists? Get it here: WPP 3.0 Beta 1.

Make sure to make a full backup before installing WPP 3.0.

Awesome, that’s great news. Thanks for testing!

Please remember to re-download the plugin again once 3.0.0 is officially available since there might be some additional changes between WPP Beta 1 and the final release (or keep an eye on the Github page to see if there’s a newer beta / RC version available).

    Hey guys,

To anyone still running the alpha / beta versions of the plugin: you must download the official 3.0 release again.
