• I tried installing WP using xampplite.exe on my home computer (pc) according to the instructions from Tamba2.org. I got up to step of downloading WordPress in a zip file, opening it and then changing the database name, user name, and password in the wp-config-sample.php file (I did this in Notepad).

The instructions said to save the changed file as wp-config.php, but I couldn’t add this new file to the zip folder from Notepad, so I saved it to the root drive where xampplite folder was. Then I copied all the files in the WP zip file to Drive_C> Xampplite> htdocs and then moved the new wp-config.php file into the same folder.

I opened the browser (IE7) and tried to open ..localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php but couldn’t access it.

I’m using Windows XP home edition SP3. Port 80 is open.

    All help is appreciated.

  • you must unzip the files and upload just the files and folders – you do not upload the zip

    Thanks samboll,

Do you mean “extract” the files to htdocs in xampplite?

What I did was open the zip file and then selcted all, copied (Ctl+C) and pasted them (Ctl+V) into the htdocs folder. Should I have extracted them to the folder instead?

    Samboll,
I finally got the WordPress install to come up. What I did was save the unzipped file to a folder on the desktop, changed the wp-config-sample.php file as instructed and saved the changed file as wp-config.php and then copied folder with all its subfolders and files into the htdocs folder of xampplite on the root drive. It worked!

Thanks for your help. I haven’t done the installing yet, so we’ll see what happens now. But so far so good.

    Thanks again

I was looking at the 5 minute install page when I wrote the above post, but then found out that I had installed WP completely (except for maybe some themes and plug-ins I might want).

Please forgive the Newbie (me) for fumbling around…but I guess that’s how we learn a lot of things
