Not able to edit files (permission issue)

  • Hi, not sure if this post belongs here. Please tell me the correct forum for it.
    I have godaddy managed wordpress hosting for my site. I have started using Filezilla to sftp to my files in the html folder on the server. I am not able to edit many files or perform many other actions on a couple of files and directories because of permission issues.
    How can I change the permissions(tried it through right clicking and managing permissions- but it doesnt work)?

  • What files are you trying to change?
    WordPress core files? Plugin files? Theme files? OR Something else?

    Hi, the files I am not able to edit have been function.php (to remove the wpadminbar WP header) and a plugin file called limit-login-attempts.php and it’s parent directory(finally I had to rename mu-login directory to get rid of login attempts limit) .

    You could try this if you can upload new files.

    1) Download functions.php to your machine
    2) Rename functions.php on the server to something else
    3) Make your changes to the local copy of functions.php
    4) Upload the modified functions.php

    If the above workaround does not work, I’m afraid, only way out is to contact your hosting provider.

    I am not able to make any changes to the above files. But there are files and directories where I am able to edit modify and rename and upload.
    For example I was not able to edit limit-login-attempts.php or rename its parent directory but I was able to rename the directory mu-login where the parent directory resides.

    Typically core files in Managed WordPress are un-editable. Based on what you have described, you are correct in the fact that you can’t edit those specific files. However we would need to get your account details to be 100% of what you’re trying to do. In Managed WordPress the file is owned by root, so you will not be able to edit it.

    I’m having similar issues also where my client has a GoDaddy Managed WordPress. I went on Chat and told the GoDaddy representative of the situation but he was unable to help me. Via FTP client, I set the directories to readable and writeable, but the WP Dashboard is still saying that the directory isn’t writeable.

    I’ll try reaching GoDaddy again, and what is the best way to tell the representative of this issue? It’s important to find a resolution.
